Oscar Niemeyer (1907–2012) redefined 20th-century architecture by introducing organic curves and lyrical sensuality to the structural discipline of reinforced concrete.A central figure of Brazilian Modernism, Niemeyer first drew global acclaim with the Pampulha project before co-founding the United Nations Headquarters in New York (1947). His monumental career culminated in the planning and execution of Brasília, where his civic monuments turned concrete and light into enduring national symbols. Beyond his architectural masterworks, Niemeyer, together with his daughter Anna Maria, created celebrated furniture designs—most notably the Rio Chaise and Alta Armchair—designed specifically to complement his curvilinear interiors. Awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1988, Niemeyer’s legacy lies in his ability to liberate form from strict functionalism, crafting an architectural language that is both structurally daring and deeply poetic.

Oscar Niemeyer began his career under Lúcio Costa before gaining acclaim for the Pampulha complex in Belo Horizonte. His monumental career culminated in Brasília—a city forged from engineering rigor, light, and sensual concrete. Driven to prevent unconsidered furniture from compromising modernist architecture, Niemeyer and his daughter, Anna Maria, developed iconic pieces including the Rio Rocking Chair, Marquesa Bench, and Alta Armchair, alongside the later ON collection. Embracing asymmetry and expressive curves, his designs liberated functionalism through a distinctly Brazilian sensibility.

Originally created for French production in 1971, the Alta Lounge Chair and its matching ottoman reflect a period when Niemeyer and his daughter were translating architectural forms into more intimate, human-scale designs. Like the Rio, it was first exhibited at Galerie La Demeure in Paris, but the Alta is a different kind of statement—more upright, more structured, and made to support the body with quiet precision. The frame is crafted from laminated wood and finished with thick leather cushions that float within the structure. Its name, Alta (“high” in Portuguese), refers to the tall, gently reclined backrest that gives it a refined, architectural posture. While the Rio is about fluidity, the Alta is about presence. The ottoman completes the gesture, extending the frame’s proportions without breaking its rhythm.
