一系列高低错落、长短不一的混凝土花园围墙,将房屋周围的土地划分开来,悄然引导着人们从室内如何欣赏周围的景色 / A series of concrete garden walls of varying heights and lengths divides the land surrounding the house, subtly guiding how the surrounding landscape is viewed from within

房屋四周环空,将周围的田野景色尽收眼底 / The roof is clad in dark pine, its coarse grain and natural texture left exposed. Vertical timber boards extend from the ridge to the eaves, while the house is surrounded by open space, offering expansive views across the surrounding fields

采用细粒天然骨料制成的石灰泥,使墙面呈现出精致的表面效果,同时通过其施工工艺,又赋予墙面真正的深度和生命力 / Lime plaster made with fine natural aggregates gives the walls a refined finish, while the application technique lends the surfaces a genuine sense of depth and vitality

底层所有起居空间都通过三面不同的窗户开口向外敞开,宽敞的开口始终被拉丝喷砂橡木饰面的体块所框住 / All living spaces on the ground floor open outwards through three distinct window configurations, with generous apertures consistently framed by volumes finished in brushed, sandblasted oak

壁炉上方悬挂着 Idris Khan 的作品,咖啡桌上则摆放着 Catherine François 的青铜雕塑 / The fireplace is lined with brushed stainless steel, accentuating the lively movement of the flames on winter nights. Above it hangs a work by Idris Khan, while a bronze sculpture by Catherine François rests on the coffee table

这种一天中所有共享时刻都在一个宽敞的房间里展开的感觉,也被直接延续到了新家的设计中,这一次,他们还增添了一丝私密性 / In their previous home, the owners lived in an open, continuous space. The sense of sharing the everyday moments of life within one generous room has been carried directly into the design of their new home, this time with an added degree of privacy

Belgian bluestone was chosen for the kitchen and heavily sandblasted to maintain the same grey palette found throughout the rest of the house

Viewed from the dining room, a large oak-framed window faces the meadow, bringing the tall wild grasses into the interior

The kitchen is positioned at the western gable end of the house, where it forms a corner with the garden wall, capturing the last rays of the evening sun

Merckx / Holvoet Architects was founded in Antwerp in 2018 by Marc Merckx and Sébastien Holvoet. Leading a close-knit team, the practice works across private residences, commercial interiors and office spaces, navigating effortlessly between warm minimalism and understated classicism. Each project seeks a considered balance of proportion, material and space, with an emphasis on natural materials that are tactile, authentic and rich in sensory qualities. The practice’s work often extends beyond architecture itself, from sourcing distinctive furniture pieces to developing bespoke furnishings in collaboration with clients. Many of the finer details are brought to life in partnership with skilled craftspeople from Belgium and across Europe.

Once their three children had moved out, the clients behind DS Residence decided it was time to leave city life behind, in search of a calmer existence with more greenery and open countryside around them. The search ended in Gestel, a small Belgian village, on a plot of farmland right beside the village castle. Designed by Merckx / Holvoet Architects, DS Residence now stands alone in the fields, in close communion with nature.

Upstairs, a night hall with an integrated desk runs through the centre of the plan, with the guest bedroom on one side and the master bedroom on the other. It's a wonderfully simple layout, with room left on the walls for art, including a work by Hiroshi Sugimoto. Both bedrooms look out over the meadow, so the day begins and ends with a view of the fields. In the bathrooms, the sandblasted bluestone returns, the basins placed like sculptures in the room and all the plumbing tucked out of sight.
