Founded in São Paulo in the late 1970s by Brazilian architect and Honorary AIA Member Marcio Kogan, Studio MK27 is a pivotal successor and innovator of Brazilian tropical modernism. The practice is dedicated to pure geometric forms, phenomenological material expressions, and the seamless integration of architecture and interior design. Grounded in the contemporary reinvention of Brazilian modernist heritage, Studio MK27 is co-led today by founder Marcio Kogan alongside partners Diana Radomysler, Renata Furlanetto, Suzana Glogowski, and Mariana Simas. The studio’s practice is characterized by radical geometric minimalism, precise tectonic detailing, and a phenomenological approach to natural materials, achieving total spatial synthesis between the architectural shell and its interior.

This photography studio, specialized in food photos, emerged from an internal design competition at Studio MK27. The team was divided into three groups to develop distinct concepts over the course of a single day. The final proposal transcended a simple synthesis of these initial sketches, evolving into an entirely new architectural design.

The project also serves as a commentary on the historic relationship between Brazilian and Japanese architecture, two traditions that maintain distinct national identities. Contemporary Japanese architects draw inspiration not only from their native heritage but also from Brazilian modernism. Studio SC incorporates core principles of Brazilian architecture from the 1930s to 1960s, alongside key elements of contemporary Japanese practice that were themselves informed by Brazilian precedents.
