Working primarily with industrial materials such as steel, he transformed weight, gravity, scale and spatial tension into visceral artistic experiences. His monumental works engage directly with architecture and landscape, inviting viewers to move through and around them rather than simply observe from a distance. Serra conceived sculpture as a dynamic relationship between the work, its site and the viewer, fundamentally expanding the physical and spatial possibilities of contemporary sculpture.
