外部立柱将楼层支撑点集中于各边的三分点,形成四个无柱悬臂角,康借此引入窗户,使空间在结构的约束中获得更开阔的采光与视野 / The external columns support each floor at the one-third points along its edges, creating four column-free cantilevered corners where Kahn positioned windows to bring natural light and expansive views into the space ©Xavier de Jaureguiberry

外围的砖砌竖井内设有楼梯和通风管道,营造出一种与康几年前绘制的意大利古代建筑草图相呼应的效果 / On the periphery, brick shafts house stairwells and air ducts, creating an effect that echoes the architecture of ancient Italian structures that Kahn had sketched just a few years prior ©Francis Wu

Louis I. Kahn (1901–1974) was one of the most influential modernist architects of the 20th century, renowned for his rigorous geometric order, monumental architectural forms, and profound exploration of natural light and the essence of space. Born in Estonia, he later emigrated to the United States, where his architectural philosophy evolved through a synthesis of modernist rationality and the historical legacy of classical architecture. Kahn employed materials such as concrete and brick, combining clear geometric forms, expressive structures, and carefully orchestrated light and shadow to create spaces of quiet solemnity. His major works include the Yale University Art Gallery, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, the Kimbell Art Museum, and the Yale Center for British Art. Transcending purely functional considerations, his architecture brings light, material, structure, and human perception together to create spaces of profound spiritual resonance, leaving a lasting impact on contemporary architecture.

The Alfred Newton Richards Medical Research Laboratories mark a pivotal moment in Louis I. Kahn’s career and a defining example of his approach to the relationship between spatial order, structural expression, and architectural function. Commissioned by the University of Pennsylvania in 1957 to support medical research and teaching, the project rejected the idea of enclosing laboratories and their technical infrastructure within a single, continuous volume. Instead, Kahn organized the building as a cluster of interconnected towers, allowing functional and structural distinctions to shape its external form.

The significance of the Richards Laboratories lies in translating the practical demands of modern scientific research into a clear architectural order. Laboratories are conceived as workplaces for observation, experimentation, and collaboration, while ventilation, circulation, and technical infrastructure are assigned distinct and legible positions. The building’s form emerges from the interaction of programme, structure, and spatial organization, reflecting Kahn’s sustained investigation into the relationship between primary spaces and the systems that support them. The project also provided an important point of reference for his subsequent work on research institutions, including the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.
