Nestled in the countryside near Padua, Italy, lies Il Palazzetto, a private residence where Renaissance heritage meets the spirit of 20th-century modernism. Originally built in 1627 as a Palladian-style villa, the house was gradually transformed through the decades-long collaboration between collector Aldo Businaro and the renowned architect Carlo Scarpa, becoming an extraordinary dialogue between history, architecture, and design.

The villa was commissioned in the 17th century by Francesco Giovanni Tassello, a prosperous physician, as a country residence embodying the aspirations of the Venetian architectural tradition. However, when Aldo Businaro acquired Il Palazzetto in 1964, the once-proud villa had fallen into severe disrepair and had long been used merely as agricultural storage. Recognizing its historical significance and architectural potential, Businaro set out to restore the residence as a family home while creating a space that could reflect the vitality of contemporary Italian design.

As an influential figure in the furniture industry, Businaro had long collaborated with leading brands such as Bernini, Knoll, and Cassina, and possessed a deep understanding of modern design culture. Beginning in the late 1960s, he invited several architects to participate in the renovation, including Tobia Scarpa and, later, his father Carlo Scarpa, whose intervention would ultimately define the character of the villa.

As one of 20th-century Italy's most intellectually profound masters of architecture and museography, Carlo Scarpa (Italy) conceptualized practice as an ultimate experiment in the phenomenology of ruins and temporal continuity. Eschewing early modernism’s radical severing of historical lineage, Scarpa treated the architectural site as a polyphonic vessel capable of harboring both historical fragments and contemporary interventions. Across the ancient Venetian masonry infrastructures, he masterfully staged spatial narratives through tense geometric ruptures, meticulously calculated interstitial lighting, and a near-ritualistic detaching of historical and contemporary materials. His tectonic logic transcends the superficial replication of antiquities; rather, within the slices of time, he deploys a disciplined, restrained rationalism to deduce a spatial ontology balancing poetic materiality with critical historical consciousness.
